First of all; this is not a Warhammer novel, it is Blood Bowl novel. There is a BIG difference which I’m sure you will see for yourself if you read it. Having said this, it is a quite good novel and worth reading if you like Blood Bowl.
Dunkel Hoffnung is a young man whose family has lost their honour, respect, fortune and estate due to some error on Dunkel’s behalf. In order to regain face and achieve gold and glory Dunk sets out on a hunt for Dragons. This job proves less glorious than what he had expected and a lot more difficult. Fortunately for him the Halfling Blood Bowl agent Slick Fullbelly have had his eye on him for quite some time as the new thrower for the Bad Bay Hackers. This brings Dunk into a series of life-threatening adventures on and off the pitch. Slowly with the aid of Slick he starts to learn about all the corruption, the violence and the glory of the game.
As mentioned this is a Blood Bowl novel, and not a Warhammer novel, so during the book Dunk gets to meet Orcs and Goblins, he becomes best friends with an Ogre and he plays a game against the undead in the subterranean field of Dungeon Bowl. This book is a quite good reflection on how it must be to play on a Human Blood Bowl team, and Dunk’s combined fascination and horror just says it all.
If you are a Blood Bowl player it is quite entertaining to try to identify some of the aspects and rules from the board game in the book, but I suspect that they are fully following The Living Rulebook 4.th. edition. If you haven’t played Blood Bowl this actually is a quite good way to get introduced to the rules. Slick is really doing his best to explain the basic rules to the rookies in the least possible violent and gory way.
I would definitely recommend this book to any Blood Bowl fan, as long as they keep in min that this is not the Warhammer world.
